The Eternal Cathedral A symbol of Gothic art, ruined by looting and revolutionary destruction, Notre-Dame was massively restored in the 19th century, and the building we admire today is largely the work of Viollet-le-Duc. In the Middle Ages, Notre-Dame was not only the cathedral of bishops and clerics, holders of power and religious knowledge. A "stone Bible" intended to give the faithful a glimpse of the greatness of the divine mystery, the scene of preaching and miracles that became famous, it also gradually became, from Philip Augustus to Louis XI, the privileged place of worship royal. After having studied the circumstances of the birth of what was in its time the largest cathedral in Europe, the work met highlights the spirituality and religious experience of a Western society in full mutation.
